About me

Dr. Kate Potter Counselling Psychologist

Welcome!
Thank you for visiting my website. The goal of this page is to provide you with insight into my background as a Counselling Psychologist and help you determine whether psychological therapy could be supportive for you at this time.

I am a qualified Counselling Psychologist with experience working in the NHS, private practice, and occupational health. My approach to therapy is rooted in the belief that everyone has the potential to make meaningful, positive changes, no matter their past or present circumstances. Together, we will explore what is no longer working in your life and work to refocus your attention on what empowers you and helps you lead a fulfilling life.

I offer therapy for a wide range of issues, including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, and chronic health issues. As part of my comprehensive approach, I use Schema Therapy, a powerful therapeutic model that can help you understand and break free from deeply ingrained patterns of behavior and emotional responses. Schema Therapy is particularly helpful for those dealing with long-term emotional struggles, personality issues, relationship difficulties, and trauma.

In addition to Schema Therapy, I am trained in the three main therapeutic modalities:
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): A proven treatment for anxiety, depression, OCD, and stress.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Focusing on understanding past experiences and how they shape current emotional difficulties.
  • Person-Centred Therapy: Creating a safe, empathetic space for you to explore your feelings and personal growth.

At the core of my therapeutic approach is acceptance, compassion, and mindfulness practices. These techniques help provide long-term, practical ways of being with the more challenging emotions we all experience, such as fear, shame, anger, and sadness. This compassionate approach aims to empower you to manage difficult emotions and move toward healing and self-acceptance.
The therapeutic relationship is central to successful therapy. Research has shown that a strong connection between therapist and client is one of the most important factors for achieving positive outcomes. I invite you to schedule an initial appointment so we can discuss your hopes and expectations for therapy. Together, we will decide if we are a good fit to continue working together.

What Clients Are Saying

"Kate is brilliant and I am so grateful to her for helping me through the 'journey' I have been on with her over the last year. She has that knack of making you feel really heard and understood - I felt like I could tell her anything and she would respond with compassionate acceptance. She is intelligent and has guided me in finding out many things about how my childhood has shaped who I am and helped me change some unhelpful patterns of thinking. I always felt better, after each session, even after talking about difficult feelings.Thank you, Kate!"
